Book which sets out to examine the exploration and perception of the Antarctic environment through the writings of the early sailing captains and explorers responsible for most of the discoveries relating to the new southern continent. The book is ordered in a roughly chronological fashion, commencing with an account of Terra Australis Incognita and culminating with an examination of the poetry and art of the early 20th c. explorers.
