Abstract (en)

Presents results of a survey project begun in 1971. Consists of a summary of the prehistoric, Roman, Medieval and post-Medieval landscapes of the area and includes a short note on place-names. The bulk of the book is a detailed description of the archaeological landscape of each of the 16 parishes which were incorporated into the new town. There is much on earthworks, road systems, ridge and furrow, moats, mills, fishponds, etc., but the architectural heritage of the area is treated summarily.
