Surveys publications of the 1760s to the mid-1790s that addressed the question of the Englishness of the English landscape garden; argues that it was the narrative that these writers established and the ideological framework that they employed that created the tradition of the English landscape garden and the canonical history of gardens that persists today; focuses on Walpole's essay, "On modern gardening," and George Mason's Essay on design in gardening.
