The past ten years has seen the discovery of, or better access to, a number of documents which have considerably enlarged our understanding of the development of the Birmingham Canal through Smethwick [ca.1768-1846]. Much has been published about this part of the canal system yet the original route of the canal and some of the changes made to it have been wrongly described and some famous engineers given credit for work carried out by others. The better information now available has been combined with the evidence still to be seen on the ground in Smethwick to give a more complete account of the canal and one which makes a fine basis for visits to the area where much is being done to present the canal as an integral part of Smethwick's history.
