Abstract (en)
A report on the technical analysis of the painting materials of a tiny altarpiece (a quadriptych) divided between the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and the Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp. It dates to ca.1400, and is an early Netherlandish work. The images were executed on oak panels prepared with chalk grounds, and the chalk ground was isolated from the oil paint by an oil-rich, white lead and chalk sealing layer except in gilded passages.
