Study of shadows and visual experience, focusing on the 18th and late 20th cs. Discusses the physical constitution of shadows, and distinguishes the physical types; sketches the 18th c. empiricist/nativist issue of the role of shadow in the perception of shape; examines results of late 20th c. research on shadow perception; deals in detail with observations on shadows by mid-18th c. French artists and scientists whose approach is here characterized as Rococo Empiricism; and concludes by setting these three bodies of thought in relation to each other, with regard to the status of shadows in 18th c.
