Critical survey of examples of recent Renaissance art history based on feminist or gender theory. Focuses on literature on paintings of the tale of Nastagio degli Onesti from Boccaccio's Decameron by Botticelli (Madrid, Prado) and Davide Ghirlandaio (dispersed); and draws attention to the difference in the treatment of Mannerism and gender at Fontainebleau compared with Florence, noting that while art historians have perceived fluid gender relations at the court of François I, they have concentrated on the normative sexual arrangements of the court of Cosimo I.
