This illuminated manuscript of the homilies of Gregory of Nazianzus (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, MS gr. 510) was produced for Basil I between 880 and 883. It contains a sequence of five painted pages at the beginning of the book which were designed to associate Basil with the angels and to project his desire for salvation (despite the fact that he murdered his way to the throne).
