Abstract (en)
Commissioned by Bologna's Senate, Guido Reni's Pallione del Voto (Bologna, Pinacoteca nazionale) served as the official banner in the civic votive procession celebrating the end of the 1630 plague. While traditional in composition, the work's imagery differs from contemporary Emilian plague paintings and was shaped by civic concerns particular to Bologna. Examination of the iconography of Reni's banner within the historical context of the commission reveals its symbolic role in the city's affirmation of traditional local devotions and its politic espousal of new cults associated with papal rule.
