Examines the iconography of Beckmann's 1936-1937 triptych Temptation (Temptation of S. Anthony) in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich. The themes are characterized as follows: in the right panel, power and ego; in the left, the heroic ideal and apocalypse; and in the center, separation and oneness. Notes that Beckmann's language is uniquely pictorial in its dependence on the simultaneity and coincidence of figure, form, and color, far removed from the literary.
