This article is adapted from a chapter in the forthcoming book Casas de vecindad y la posibilidad de ser nosotros en la ciudad: La Vivienda colectiva a fines de siglo en el Caribe Hispano 1890-1930. It considers the phenomenon of casas de vecindad (low-rise multifamily housing) in the cities of the Hispanic Caribbean.
