Carpo analyzes Sebastiano Serlio's Extraordinario libro, which was one of the first architectural publications printed with engraved illustrations during the 16th c. The treatise included engravings of 50 portals (the first 30 are rusticated, the second 20 are described as "delicate" by Serlio). According to the reviewer, Carpo interprets Serlio's descriptions to mean that the rusticated decoration is similar to a mask that may be removed to reveal a portal of correct Vitruvian proportions.
