Abstract
(en)
Investigates the Carracci reform of painting from the point of view of their teaching methods; considers whether these departed from traditional Renaissance and Mannerist preparatory methods; also considers whether their method replaced past practice and influenced the new methods of the 17th c. Finds parallels between their method and Raphael's, and concludes that instead of reacting against the preparatory methods of the Mannerists they added to them by incorporating an understanding of nature, ancient art, and Renaissance artists into a calculated program of study; also concludes that the Carracci method was carried on by their pupils.
