Abstract
(en)
Discusses Wackenroder's aesthetics and art theory (especially in relation to the Italian Renaissance), noting five key features in his writings: an absence of descriptions of specific works; the principle of art as the highest form of human achievement; a refusal to assign relative levels of importance to individual artists; a similarly tolerant and relativist appreciation of the art of all ages and places; the belief in art as a material manifestation of the divine. Also discusses Wackenroder's writings in relation to the art and art theory of the Catholic revival, especially the Nazarenes. The final section examines Wackenroder's influence on the literary genre of semifictional artistic biography, as well as his significance in the development of nationalism during the Romantic era.
