Abstract
(en)
Considers various hypotheses regarding the commission and date of the suite of 16th c. Flemish (Brussels) tapestries entitled Successes and Triumph of D. João de Castro (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum); suggests in conclusion that the cartoons could be later than 1560 or even 1570, that the series involves the iconography of a marriage and may be linked to negotiations for a marriage between Sebastião I and Marguerite de Valois in which Álvaro de Castro was involved, and that when the marriage fell through, D. Álvaro lost interest in the commission or even canceled it.
