Abstract (en)
"What is art history needed for?" asks the new professor of art history at Helsinki University. Nikula does not deny the achievements of positivist and idealist art history, but finds that the nature of the research is now different. The questions of the significance of visual art for all people in all environments are currently approached with less prejudice than perhaps ever before. Nikula believes that we must allow ourselves and others to have an equally strong aesthetic experience with works of art thousands of years old, and the latest rock videos; as scholars we have to understand the enormous challenge in it. One can only grow into the attitude of being an independent researcher by entering into all art with care and empathy, criticism and appreciation.
