Abstract (en)

Francesco di Giorgio architetto is a two-volume catalogue for the 1993 exhibition in Siena (Palazzo Pubblico), which includes his drawings of machines and military architecture. As the reviewer notes, Bechmann focuses on Villard's descriptions of utilitarian artifacts, among them a tower flanked by triangular bastions from his sketchbook. Frommel and Adams's treatise on Sangallo looks at his fortifications, machines, and festival architecture. Pollak's book encompasses treatises published in Europe between 1554 and 1725. Charles van den Heuvel's book on paper bulwarks concentrates on Italian town planning and fortifications imported into the Low Countries between 1540 and 1609. The reviewer notes that "especially noteworthy is chapter six, which deals with the introduction and reception of Italian fortification and city planning in Dutch architectural theory".
