Abstract (en)
The revolutionary government of Zanzibar sought to eradicate the colonial legacy by imposing socialist elements on the landscape. Redevelopment for this goal focused on the portion of Zanzibar City known as Ng'ambo, or the Other Side. The revolutionary government excluded residents from the process. This article examines their response in the transformation of the area. The analysis shows the importance of input from persons or groups that are often omitted from institutional urban-planning activities.
