Abstract (en)

The exhibition was divided into three parts: first, the works of art; second, text panels that trace the critical discourse about each artist's work as well as a large panel tracking the amount and kind of press given to each artist over the course of her or his career; and third, a small reading room. The exhibition catalogue contains a transcript of an informal symposium held at the Humanities Research Institute at UC Irvine which addressed the relations of artists, critics, and curators. Presents selected works of 11 African American artists (not all works of the exhibition are reproduced in the catalogue), and essays by Maurice Berger, Charles Gaines, and Catherine Lord.
