Abstract (en)
Full-size solid silver bath commissioned in 1724 by Dom João V from London silversmith Paul Crespin. The king apparently intended the bath as a gift to his mistress (a nun), but their relationship was broken off before the piece could be delivered. When it arrived in Lisbon, the bath was installed in the royal palace in Terreiro do Paço. It remained there until the palace and its contents were destroyed in 1755 during an earthquake. Delaforce appends a contemporary description of the bath, excerpted from a travel account by César de Saussure.
