Study and reconstruction of the two-sided altarpiece of SS. Annunziata, Florence - originally comprised of a frame by Baccio d'Agnolo and eight paintings by Filippino Lippi and Perugino - in light of new documentary evidence published here: agreements between Fra Zaccheria and Baccio d'Agnolo for the frame (15 Sept 1500), and between Fra Zaccheria and Filippino Lippi for the paintings (15 Sept 1503). Examines the functions served by the altarpiece in the church (given the removal of the rood screen, as well as Alberti's design of the choir), and considers its importance in the development of the high-altarpiece in the 16th c. Also reconstructs its appearance following the alterations of 1546; and reconsiders evidence concerning Leonardo's work for SS. Annunziata, dispelling traditional assumptions linking him with the altarpiece and its frame.
