Abstract (en)
Analyzes the inseparable relationship of ritual and art. Defines ritual as an action whose form seems to have significance both for the person who performs it and for the person who sees it, and art as a manmade object or configuration whose form seems to have significance both for the person who makes it and for the person who sees it. Argues that the human predisposition to ritual and artistic activity constitutes a genetic inheritance from our animal ancestors, noting that ritual has always been essential for species survival. Asserts that the phenomena of style, subject matter, and repetitive ornament in visual art (and the social responses to them) have clear parallels in the realm of animal ritual behavior.
