On the basis of two mid-18th c. plans, archival records, and the results of archaeological excavations, describes the original layout of the vegetable and medicinal plant gardens established by the Moravian settlers in the Wachovia region of North Carolina. Shows that in both the selection of plants cultivated and in the arrangement of the gardens, the Moravians continued the traditions of European gardening brought with them from Germany.
