Surveys the evolution of garden design in Little Rock, Arkansas, showing how southern gardeners attempted to develop a style specific to the environment, rather than slavishly copying the English-inspired designs of Andrew Jackson Downing that were so prevalent in the north. Discusses particular examples of Little Rock gardens, known from descriptions, plans and surviving photographic documentation. (Appendix publishes a list of plants used in a garden, ca.1880).
