Explores the myth and persona of the French actress in the late 19th c., in particular as she is portrayed in the 1898 publication Les femmes d'Israël, by François Bournand and Raphael Viau. Shows how Bernhardt was in many ways able to capitalize on her status as a Jewess in a society that viewed Jews as marginal. Considers popular images of Bernhardt in this light, including posters by Mucha, and publicity photographs.
