Describes the controversial restoration and repair of Newman's 1966-1967 painting (Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum), which had been severely cut by a vandal in 1986. Daniel Goldreyer, a restoration expert from New York, was hired to repair the damage, but subsequent examinations of the work show that he did not follow standard restoration practices. The museum and numerous art critics are now asking whether the overpainted and repaired work should still be called a Barnett Newman.
