Outlines the philosophical and scientific views of vegetality in the first half of the 19th c., as compared to animal life, and shows how the curved roofs of greenhouses during this period were designed specifically to answer to beliefs about the nature of plant life. Looks in particular at greenhouses designed by John Claudius Loudon, 1815-1827, and at the Palm House, Kew Gardens, London, 1843.
