Abstract
(en)
Re-examines the development of Rubens's landscape paintings, looking at their chronology and construction, and reconsidering the works in context of the artist's life and artistic concerns. The survey begins by placing the landscapes in the tradition of Flemish landscape painting, in particular showing their relationship to the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Rubens's working methods are compared with contemporary landscape practice, and in a chapter on the making of the landscape, describes the construction, preparation and the ground of the panels he used, and the panelmakers who made them. Concludes with a brief look at the reputation of Rubens's essentially private landscape paintings, and the influence of these works on British painters.
