Argues that the Portrait of a Gentleman by Lotto in the Cini collection in Venice is not a posthumous portrait of Girolamo degli Azzoni Avogaro (as Berenson and others thought), nor the portrait of Fioravanti Avogaro that, according to the libro di spese diverse, Lotto painted in 1543, but the contemporaneous portrait of the podestà and captain of Treviso, Francesco Giustiniani, for which Lotto recorded meager payments in Nov 1542 and Feb 1543. Appendix with unpublished documents concerning Fioravanti Avogaro (1577 and 1581) and Giustiniani (1526 and 1537).
