Abstract
(en)
Altdorfer's ca.1520 painting of The Beautiful Madonna of Regensburg (Regensburg, Diözesanmuseum S. Ulrich) was either the icon, or copy of an icon, which was one of the principal works of devotional imagery at the pilgrimage chapel dedicated to Mary the Beautiful in Regensburg. The chapel was established in 1519 following the expulsion of the Jews from Regensburg. Both Martin Luther and Albrecht Dürer decried the veneration of the Virgin's image. The Regensburg phenomenon was but part of the cult of images, which rapidly spread through Germany in the early 16th c.
