Abstract
(en)
Reports the discovery of three small reliefs on the exterior walls of the campanile of the cathedral of Nardò: two clipei with images of SS. John the Evangelist and John the Baptist and a rectangular slab representing the patron; identifies the latter as the Benedictine abbot Bartolomeo, who presumably sponsored the restoration of the cathedral - then the abbey church of S. Maria - following the earthquake of 1350; dates the reliefs accordingly and draws attention to the influence of Caucasian, probably Armenian, traditions, citing accounts of relations between Armenia and Southern Italy from the 6th c. through the Middle Ages.
