Abstract
(en)
Focuses on the question of Veronese's connections with Rudolf II, noting that the accounts of Ridolfi and Borghini are unverified and that none of the pictures they cite is mentioned in the inventories of Rudolf's collection in the castle of Prague; traces the history of the paintings that are cited in the inventories; concludes that they were purchased, not commissioned; and suggests possible agents. Also discusses the acquisition of paintings of Veronese by the duke of Buckingham, Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, and the duke of Hamilton; and briefly mentions Dutch and Flemish merchant collectors of his works.
