Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the influence of Veronese on painters associated with the Venetian Accademia in the first half of the 19th c., arguing that it was primarily technical and related to the emphasis placed by the Accademia upon the restoration of works of art. Focuses on the cases of Lattanzio Querena and Sebastiano Santi, restorers of Veronese's works in S. Sebastiano, and on Placido Fabris, author of numerous copies after Veronese. Concludes that 19th c. painters in contact with Veronese's work through restoration and academic studies produced results having more to do with academic syncretism than a conscious grasp of vital formal elements.
