Abstract
(en)
Points out that Veronese and his workshop produced at least 17 images of the Annunciation, that 12 of them date from 1578-1588, and that of these nine are of medium or small size. Deduces that Veronese and his shop were privileged in the demand for private devotional representations of the Annunciation, and considers reasons for the popularity of both the subject and Veronese's treatment of it. Identifies the principal reasons respectively as the response to the plague of 1575-1577 and Veronese's style, especially his depiction of fictive architecture, particularly significant in conjunction with the iconography of the Annunciation.
