Abstract (en)
Points out that the contract of 6 June 1562 for Veronese's Marriage at Cana (Paris, Louvre) for the refectory of S. Giorgio Maggiore (Venice) required that the artist use the best quality of paint, illustrating conservative aspects of the condition of painting in Venice, but on the other hand gave him great freedom in the handling of the narrative, reflecting progressive aspects. Argues that Veronese's response embodies a sense of decorum derived from the programs for his large-scale secular decorative schemes; and that as such it balances the traditional elements in his work with a progressive one that has its root in pride in Venice's political stability in the 16th c.
