Abstract (en)
Studies the iconography of the tondi painted 1556-1557 by Zelotti, Battista Franco, Giovanni De Mio, Giuseppe Salviati, Schiavone, Giulio Licinio, and Veronese on the ceiling of the Salone of the Libreria Marciana (Venice); concludes that while the ceiling is meant to celebrate learning generally, there is no coherent, unifying iconographic program, and the paintings were intended to give an appearance of learning and sophistication rather than to proclaim a particular message.
