Traces the rise of exhibitions of architectural materials in the late 20th c., discussing the challenges inherent in such enterprises and the shifting character of the books and catalogues accompanying them. Proposes that catalogues be offered in two parts: the first, available during the exhibition, with catalogue entries and factual materials; the second, with essays and synthetic treatments written in response to the installation, available only after the fact.
