Abstract (en)

Studies the vault frescoes of the nave, especially those of the Doctors of the Church in the first bay, in the Upper Church of S. Francesco (Assisi). Attributes them to a Roman painter, and claims that the guiding force of the S. Francis Legend was also Roman (not Giotto or even Florentine, as has been often claimed from Vasari onward).
