Abstract (en)
Notes that the pivotal figures in three of Donatello's four stucco reliefs illustrating the life of S. John the Evangelist (Florence, S. Lorenzo, Sagrestia vecchia) are in the sky. Associates these figures with the wonder felt toward automata and theatrical mechanemata, claiming that Donatello's figures "are creatures first and foremost of the world of the quattrocento stage." Cites especially the admiration felt by Abramo, Bishop of Souzdal, before Florentine religious dramas in 1439.
