Casts new light on the life and work of the Genoese tenebroso painter Francesco Rosa, focusing on his activity in Venice. Sorts out the confusion between his identity and that of the Francesco Rosa (1638-1687) active contemporaneously in Rome, and reconstructs the stages of his career, concluding that he was born ca.1635-1640, trained in Genoa, active in Venice 1663-1675 and in Bavaria 1679-1699, and back in Venice in 1710 after a brief period in Brussels. Provides formal analysis and a reconstruction of his Venetian works, proposing and correcting attributions.
