The Victoria Memorial Hall museum was conceived in 1901 by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, as a monument to the recently deceased Queen-Empress Victoria. The English Baroque structure which incorporates Indian elements was built 1902-1921 to designs of William Emerson and Vincent Esch. Besides being an outstanding monument to British India, and an important example of British colonial architecture, the museum has one of the finest collections of paintings by European artists working in India ca.1760-1830. This volume presents the architecture and collections of the Victoria Memorial Hall, and tells about efforts to preserve both undertaken since 1990.
