Abstract (en)
Reviews the discipline of art history's ongoing attempts to evaluate itself, its goals, and its methodologies in the poststructuralist era, noting the marked preoccupation of American art historians with methodological theory as opposed to the more traditional practice of art history in Europe. In this context considers the recent (1996) collection of essays on art historical terminology and practice, Critical terms for art history, edited by Robert Nelson and Richard Schiff. Discusses the conceptual approach of the editors and the importance of their choice of Jasper Johns's Painted Bronze (Savarin) (collection of the artist) as the cover illustration, using the interpretation of Johns's sculpture as a paradigmatic methodological exercise
