Abstract (en)
Prompted by Robert Goldwater's claim of 1953 that Dove was a "pioneer of abstract expressionism," explores Dove's paintings in light of the movement. Discusses especially the varying definitions of the terms abstraction, expressionism, abstract expressionism, and the relation of art to nature in the writings of various critics and commentators who have sought to define the movement.
