Abstract (en)

Reviews the Mapplethorpe exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London (through 17 Nov 1996). Notes that it is now commonplace for Mapplethorpe exhibitions to generate censorship, charges of obscenity, and scandals which are media events. This show was no exception. The Hayward Gallery self-censored two of the most problematic photographs. [See also p. 53 of this issue for Lydiate's remarks on this incident].
