Reviewer outlines and praises Masters's study of how Leonardo and Machiavelli were in essence the originators of modernity, i.e., that approach to human activity which connects theory to practice, and in which humans believe nature can be controlled or conquered for the benefit of the community. The pivotal issue for Masters is the impact of Leonardo's scientific and technical perspective on Machiavelli's thinking about human political behavior.
