Studies the tomb of Pope Alexander VIII, designed by Carlo Enrico di San Martino with sculpture by Angelo de' Rossi and others (1695-1725; Rome, Vatican, S. Peter). Examines the tomb's components formally and iconographically, identifying figures in the principal relief - which depicts Alexander VIII's canonization of five saints (Lorenzo Giustiniani, Giovanni di Capistrano, Giovanni di Dio, Pasquale Baylon, and Giovanni San Facondo) in a ceremony of 1690 - discussing the allegorical figures that flank the sarcophagus (Prudence and Religion), and elaborating the prototypes for the papal effigy. Considers the patron of the tomb, Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, the situation of the tomb within the basilica, and the contemporary responses it generated.
