Abstract (en)

Studies Goya's Black Paintings (1819-1823; Madrid, Prado), reviewing the literature on their interpretation. Focuses on the Saturn, claiming the need to see it as more than a political or psychological unicum; places it instead in the company of such other works as the Saturn of Rubens (1636-1638; Madrid, Prado) and, especially, the Belvedere Torso (Rome, Musei Vaticani). Notes importance of considering the artist's anti-classicism in its interpretation.
