During the so-called Charleston Renaissance, ca.1915-1940, painters and printmakers contributed both consciously and unconsciously to the cause of promoting the South Carolina city for its climate, history and architectural distinction. Leading local artists in the movement were Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Anna Heyward Taylor and Alfred Hutty.
