Discusses the pastoral Irish imagery of Paul Henry's paintings - especially his landscapes - in light of the nationalist ideology promoted by the fledgling Irish Free State. Kennedy says the cosy, rural Ireland depicted by Henry was a romantic fiction perceived as reality.
