Discusses the Philadelphia-made Van Pelt high chest (1765-1780; Winterthur, Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum), with particular attention to its alterations and the effects these have on our perceptions of the work and its context. Addresses the issue of restoration policies for museums and their relationship to the public.
